MDF thickness and weight chart
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is sold at its stated thickness: the MDF standard, ANSI A208.2-2022, holds a panel’s average to within 0.005 in of it. What a sheet weighs depends on the mill, so the density below comes from three makers’ own data sheets for standard MDF: Weyerhaeuser, Roseburg and West Fraser.
| Thickness | Actual (in) | mm | Density (lb/ft³) | 4 × 8 sheet | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 in | 0.245–0.255 | 6.4 | 49.8 (45–55) | 33 lb (30–37) | Only two sources publish this: Roseburg and West Fraser |
| 3/8 in | 0.370–0.380 | 9.5 | 49 (45–55) | 49 lb (45–55) | Median of 3 sources |
| 1/2 in | 0.495–0.505 | 12.7 | 49 (45–55) | 65 lb (60–73) | Median of 3 sources |
| 5/8 in | 0.620–0.630 | 15.9 | 46.5 (45–48.5) | 78 lb (75–81) | Median of 3 sources |
| 3/4 in | 0.745–0.755 | 19 | 46.5 (41–48.5) | 93 lb (82–97) | Median of 3 sources |
| 1 in | 0.995–1.005 | 25.4 | 46.3 (43–48.5) | 123 lb (115–129) | Only two sources publish this: Weyerhaeuser and Roseburg |

Reading the chart
The density is the median of the three makers where all three publish that thickness, with the lowest and highest of their figures in brackets. Weyerhaeuser does not make 1/4 in and West Fraser stops at 3/4 in, so those two rows rest on the two makers that do, named on each page. The weight is the density times the sheet’s volume.
The standard itself fixes no density: it says MDF is typically 31 to 62 lb/ft³ (500 to 1,000 kg/m³) and grades it by strength. Moisture-resistant, fire-rated and light MDF are different products with their own figures, and are not in this chart.
Plywood is different: a sheet sold as 3/4 is often 23/32 or thinner. See the plywood thickness chart. For how much a shelf of MDF sags under load, use the shelf sag calculator.

What a sheet or a stack of parts weighs, from its size and thickness.
Weight, about
93 lb
82–97 lb across the makers · 42.2 kg
Median of 3 sources
Why: The median of three makers' published densities for 3/4 in standard MDF, times your volume.
Why these numbers?
The situation
Makers' data sheets give standard MDF at 3/4 in these densities, in lb/ft³: Weyerhaeuser 48.5, Roseburg 41–47, West Fraser 46.5.
What that means
Your parts come to 2 ft³ of 3/4 in MDF.
From your input: part size
So
The median of the three is 46.5 lb/ft³; the makers span 41–48.5.
Arithmetic: exact by definition
The number
2 ft³ × 46.5 lb/ft³ = 93 lb (82–97 lb across the makers).
