Router bit speed by diameter

3 in router bit speed

The fastest a router should spin a bit with a 3 in (76.2 mm) cutting diameter, from the speed tables bit makers and a woodworking magazine print. The maximum marked on your bit or its package always comes first when it is lower.

Maximum speed

12,000 RPM

Median of 4 sources

The median of 4 charts; they span 10,000 to 16,000 RPM.

Rim speed at that RPM

9,425 ft/min

π × 3 in × 12,000 RPM ÷ 12 = 9,425 ft/min (47.9 m/s): how fast the cutting edge travels.

Each chart’s maximum for 3 in

As each table prints it. A dash means that table doesn’t reach this size.

Speed rules the makers agree on

  • Never run a bit faster than the maximum speed marked on it or its package; a bit run over its rated speed can break and fly apart.

  • Bigger bits need lower speed: every chart here steps the maximum down as the diameter grows, because the edge of a bigger bit travels faster at the same RPM.

  • DeWALT: do not use bits larger than 2-1/2 in in diameter in the DW616 or DW618, and follow the bit maker’s speed.
