How many board feet in a 2x4x12?

By the name (nominal)

8 bd ft

2 × 4 in × 12 ft

By the actual dry size

5.25 bd ft

1-1/2 × 3-1/2 in × 12 ft

From the standard, NIST PS 20-25

The math

  1. A board foot is 144 cubic inches: a piece 1 in thick, 12 in wide and 1 ft long. So board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12.
  2. By the name: 2 × 4 × 12 ÷ 12 = 8 bd ft.
  3. A dry 2x4 is dressed to at least 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 in under the softwood lumber standard, so the wood you get is 1.5 × 3.5 × 12 ÷ 12 = 5.25 bd ft.
  4. A yard that quotes softwood in board feet may count either size; ask which one it prices on.

What a 2x4x12 weighs

The weight of the dressed board, 0.438 cubic feet, at 12% moisture content: volume × the Wood Handbook’s density, 62.43 lb/ft³ × its specific gravity at 12% × 1.12. Wood wetter than 12% weighs more; the wood weight calculator works it out at any moisture content.

SpeciesSpecific gravity (12%)lb/ft³Weight
Douglas-fir (coast)0.4833.614.7 lb
Southern pine (loblolly)0.5135.715.6 lb
Western hemlock0.4531.513.8 lb
Eastern white pine0.3524.510.7 lb
White spruce0.3625.211 lb
