Epoxy calculator

How much epoxy a pour takes: a rectangular top, a round one, or the void of a river table. Pick the product and the calculator splits the total into resin and hardener by that product’s own mix ratio, and counts the layers its maker’s maximum pour depth needs.

Units

Shape of the pour

Measure the gap in a few places and average them.

Deep pours: river tables, slabs and castings. Mix ratio 2:1 by volume, 100:44 by weight.

None of the makers listed prints a waste allowance, so none is added unless you enter one.

Mixed epoxy

2.81 gal

359.1 fl oz · 10,619 mL · 2.81 gal · 10.62 L

Resin (part A)
239.4 fl oz · 7,079 mL · 1.87 gal · 7.08 L
Hardener (part B)
119.7 fl oz · 3,540 mL · 0.94 gal · 3.54 L

1 pour, 3 batches each. Up to 3 in for castings of no more than 1 mixed gallon; up to 2 in for river tables and slab pours

Why: 2.81 gal of mixed TotalBoat Fathom Deep Pour Epoxy: 1.87 gal resin and 0.94 gal hardener.

Why these numbers?
  1. The situation

A river table void 72 in × 6 in, 1 1/2 in deep, in TotalBoat Fathom Deep Pour Epoxy.

From your input: shape, sizes and product

  2. What that means

    The pour holds 72 in × 6 in × 1 1/2 in = 648 cu in, which is 2.81 gal.

    Arithmetic: exact by definition

  3. So

TotalBoat mixes TotalBoat Fathom Deep Pour Epoxy 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume, so 2/3 of the mix is resin and 1/3 hardener.

  4. The number

TotalBoat gives Up to 3 in for castings of no more than 1 mixed gallon; up to 2 in for river tables and slab pours. At 1 1/2 in deep that is 1 layer, mixed in 3 batches of no more than 1 gal each per layer.

How we source these numbers

How the amount is worked out

The volume is plain geometry: length × width × depth for a rectangle, π × radius² × depth for a circle, and for a river table the river’s length × its average width × the depth, because only the gap between the slabs is filled. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches by definition, so the volume converts exactly to fluid ounces, gallons, millilitres and litres.

Resin and hardener are split by the product’s ratio by volume, as its maker prints it. Ratios differ a lot between products, so measure with the ratio on your own kit, and by volume unless your maker gives a weight ratio and you weigh. None of the makers below prints a waste allowance, so the calculator adds none unless you enter one.

Each product also has a maximum depth for one pour, and some limit how much you mix at once. TotalBoat’s sheets warn that pouring thicker than the maximum can overheat the cure. When a pour is deeper than the limit, the calculator splits it into layers, and when a layer is more than the product’s largest batch, into batches.
